Why Kandi Burruss is a Much Smarter Business Woman Than You May Have Thought -- And Her Bank Account

Kandi Burruss was known in the 90's as a member of the popular R&B group, Xscape, and as an award-winning songwriter for acts like TLC, Pink, and Destiny's Child. But nowadays, she is known for being a serial entrepreneur and a reality TV star on Real Housewives of Atlanta. She has an estimated net worth of $35 million.

So how did she do it? Well, with a following of more than 4 million fans on her Facebook page and almost 5 million on her Instagram page, she has cleverly used her influence to launch several successful businesses related to adult fashion, kid's fashion, adult toys, and cuisine.

Here are just some of her companies:

#1 - TAGS Boutique: Launched as Kandi's first endeavor outside of music, TAGS Boutique sells luxury women's apparel at affordable price points. The company sells clothing, accessories and shoes both online and offline at their storefront locations in Augusta, Georgia and Las Vegas, Nevada.

#2 - Bedroom Kandi: After partnering with French-American designer, Mathieu Pung, Kandi launched her very own line of adult toys. Sold exclusively online, her products include lingerie, massagers, lubricants, lip sticks, scented candles and even erotic fragrance oils.

#3 - Raising Ace: The concept for this company was influenced heavily by Kandi's son, whose name is Ace. In partnership with Ace's father (Kandi's husband), Todd Tucker, and designer Mathieu Pung, Raising Ace sells high quality baby and children’s products that have unique animal designs and make parenting fun and engaging.

#4 - Old Lady Gang: This Atlanta-based restaurant and catering service was started by Kandi and her husband, Todd, but is run primarily by her mother Joyce Jones and her aunts Bertha Jones & Nora Wilcox. As master chefs known as the "three firecrackers", their menu promises to deliver good old fashioned southern cuisine "made with love".

On being successful

During a recent interview with Forbes, Kandi comments, "I love being the woman who breaks down barriers for other women... I always want to push my peers to step up their game. Sometimes, I don’t even know I’m breaking barriers down when I'm doing it. Making history is definitely success, because nobody can take that away from you."

That is truly powerful advice from a business woman that has had so much success in so many different industries. Most people don't know that in the year 2000, Kandi was the first female ever to win the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year award at the annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Awards. But she has broken many more barriers since then in other sectors.

What a great example for other women entrepreneurs to see the importance of being versatile in business!
